"El año de 1741 significa un punto de inflexión en la historia urbana y defensiva de Cartagena de Indias tras el fracaso del intento de conquista del almirante Edward Vernon. El análisis del proceso constructivo de la ciudad desde su fundación, la gestación y evolución de sus fortificaciones, así como el desarrollo de la batalla y la reconstrucción posterior con propuestas poliorcéticas novedosas que aseguraran la plaza, son los objetivos básicos de esta monografía. Con un relato ameno y didáctico se escalonan los distintos capítulos que se ilustran con las planimetrías y dibujos de los ingenieros responsables en cada momento del sistema defensivo. Estas abundantes imígenes ponen de manifiesto la importancia de Cartagena para la monarquía hispana, a la vez que su excelente realización nos ilustra sobre la capacidad técnica y estética de los dibujantes. Muchos de estos planos se publican por primera vez y otros lo hacen con calidad no advertida con anterioridad. Por último, a las referencias bibliográficas se añade un importante anexo documental, relacionado con Cartagena a mediados del siglo XVIII, que recoge los textos fundamentales concernientes al asedio de 1741" |
